How to press a forklift tyre: press-on tyres

13 September 2022

There are different types of tyres that can be fitted to forklifts, each with their own benefits. The type of forklift tyres you need depends on the design of your forklift and what you’re using it for. No matter which type of tyres you’re using, you need to take care of them if you want them to last a long time. Not sure how? Check out our handy tyres guide.

Forklifts are commonly used to lift and transport heavy loads, so strength and stability are important. That’s why the majority of forklifts are fitted with solid tyres or press-on tyres. These are not interchangeable – forklifts are built for use with solid tyres or press-on tyres, but never both. Solid tyres and press-on tyres optimise safety, are puncture-proof and they can’t burst. To assemble these types of tyres, you need a tyre press.

You’ve already discovered how to press solid standard tyres and solid clip tyres in parts 1 (solid standard tyres) and 2 (solid clip tyres) of this blog series. Now we’re going to explain how to work with press-on tyres.

Press-on tyres are similar to solid tyres in terms of stability and function, but they’re constructed differently. They’re made of a single layer of rubber that’s moulded to a steel rim.

Press-on tyres need to be replaced when 30% of the tyre’s original tread has worn away. You’ll be able to tell when this has happened because the outer layer of rubber will have worn down to the tyre brand name or logo. The tyre should also be replaced if you notice the rubber separating from the metal band far enough that you can insert a screwdriver or knife into the space.

5 steps to assemble a press-on tyre using a tyre press

  1. Place the centre specific tool on the lower plate of the tyre press and position the rim of your tyre on top of it.
  2. Grease the tyre rim and the inside of the tyre, making sure to use a lot of grease as this will help the two parts to fit together smoothly.
  3. Centre the tyre over the rim.
  4. Check to ensure all the parts are perfectly aligned on top of one another, and that the press-on tyre is perfectly level.
  5. Press down using the tyre press to fit the tyre onto the rim.

3 steps to disassemble a press-on tyre

  1. Place the tyre you wish to disassemble on top of the centre specific tool on your tyre press.
  2. Grease the inside of a second press-on tyre, then place this on top of the tyre you wish to disassemble.
  3. Press down with the tyre press to disassemble the old tyre, while simultaneously assembling the new tyre.
