Hydraulic seals
Seals are parts that should never be neglected. Whenever repairs or replacements are done, it is advised to also replace the seals of the component.
Hydraulic seals prevent leakage and contamination in the hydraulic system that could cause malfunctions. These seals are made of soft material and are captured in grooves or fixed in a combination of rings, forming a seal assembly.
Their function of blocking or separating fluids in the hydraulic system is vital for the smooth operation of the machinery.
Discover our range of hydraulic seals
There are many types of hydraulic seals. Each one has a unique purpose and is essential for the hydraulic system. Below you can find the types of hydraulic seals we have on offer at TVH:
- O-ring: this is a static, endless, round sealing ring with a circular cross-section. This type of seal is fabricated through vulcanization from molding tools as a complete ring.
- Back-up Ring: this seal is used in combination with an O-ring and serves as a backup to prevent extrusion due to excessive pressure on the O-ring.
- V-ring: used on rotating parts. The V-ring is self-retaining on the shaft. It is flexible and applies a low-contact pressure against the counter surface, sufficient to maintain the sealing function.
- Oil Seal: this is also a rotary seal used on engines and other applications. This seal is able to withstand high temperatures, pressures and rapid movements. Its purpose is to keep oil inside and depending on the type it can also keep contaminants out.
- Piston Seal: this type of seal maintains sealing contact between a piston and cylinder bore. The moving piston rod applies high pressure on the piston seal which increases contact forces between the seal and cylinder surface.
- Lip Seal: comparable to a piston seal. The main difference is that this type of seal only works in 1 direction as opposed to the piston seal which works in 2 directions.
- Guide Ring: this ring does not have a sealing function. Its purpose is to guide a moving part over a static part. It makes sure everything stays in alignment to prevent leaks.
- Wiper Ring: keeps contaminants such as dust and dirt out of the cylinder.
- Composite Seal: this seal can have the same properties as a piston seal or lip seal. The composite seal can function differently depending on the shape and application. The composite seal consists of multiple parts.
- Bonded Seal: used solely to seal screws and bolts on the assembly. It consists of a metal and a rubber part that is put on the head of the screw or bolt to completely seal the assembly.
Tips & tricks to keep you going and growing
Hydraulic seals tend to be fragile parts when installed incorrectly. Doing so can often lead to the failure of the hydraulic system. Below you can find a list of key points provided by our experts to keep in mind during installation. This way you can get the most out of your hydraulic seals!
- Make sure all parts are clean and free of burrs, welding splatter, … Repairs need to be performed in an area as free of dust and moisture as possible.
- Seals may not come in contact with sharp edges, drilled holes, or threads during assembly. Holes need to be chamfered. Use installation tools, sleeves or mounting tubes.
- All seals must be lubricated with the same or compatible fluid that is used in the hydraulic system.
- Use the correct tools and don’t leave the seals in a deformed position for too long during assembly.
- Ensure the correct orientation of the seal in respect to the fluid direction.
These are the rules of thumb that will keep you going and growing with a healthy hydraulic system.
