Internship Programs can provide business and participants a fresh perspective and valuable experience in the business world. Whether it's a high school student getting their first introduction into a real world working environment, or a college student hoping to get practical experience in their chosen field, internships help students gain valuable work experience while still in school. It can even benefit employers and interns alike as it opens up additional opportunities for full time employment in the future. Interns join the TVH Team each summer to participate in our Internship program through their respective high school or university. This year, TVH had a total of 7 college and high school interns at our America’s headquarters in Olathe, KS. They got to experience a wide range of different departments and positions that make up the TVH Team, including, Product Development, Human Resources, Operations, and more.
Nicole Patrao, a high school intern working with the Human Resources Department, put it best when asked about the program. “I really enjoyed how versatile my role was, and how I was able to jump into many different projects, learning as I go. Even though I am in Human Resources, my work is not limited to just that department. Overall, this internship has been a great introduction to a corporate environment, and I’m very fortunate to have this experience!”
The same can be said for our college interns as well, like Dolapo Adewumi, who interned with the Product Development Department (PRD) in Olathe, KS. “I go to the University of Missouri- Kansas City (UMKC), and chose TVH for my summer internship because it gave me the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, as my career goal after graduation is to work in the PRD or Management field. I will even be continuing my internship into the school year, which gives me the opportunity to gain work experience and finish my schooling at the same time.”
There is no question our internship program has made a noticeable impact on TVH as a whole, as it has proven to be an effective talent pipeline in recent years. Since 2018, 22 of the past 27 interns have returned to TVH to resume their internship or take on a full time position after they’ve graduated. That’s over an 80% conversion rate for interns, helping to consistently bring a fresh perspective and new ideas to TVH. No one can attest to this more than our current Talent Development Specialist for Human Resources, Madysson Gress, who was a former intern herself! “I joined TVH in 2015 when I was in high school, originally interning for the Accounting Department. Els Thermote was actually my mentor when I was in school, which was how I found out about TVH in the first place. She encouraged me to find the position in the company that was right for me. While I was in school at UMKC I interned with TVH again, this time for the Human Resources Department, helping to develop the Training and Development program. This gave me the opportunity to basically learn HR from the ground up, and really improve myself professionally by working on a variety of projects and initiatives. I’ve been with TVH for six years, and now as a Talent Development Specialist, I really can say I have a strong passion and love for what I do. I hope to keep that going in the years to come with TVH.”
TVH will attend at least seven career fairs this fall to recruit candidates for internships for 2022. Some of the locations we plan to attend include University of Kansas, Missouri Science and Technology, Pittsburg State University, and more. Bryan Brazil, the Talent Acquisition Manager for TVH, hopes to hire at least 10 interns for the Summer of 2022. He sees the program continuing to grow as TVH looks to invest in the future by working with early career talent in all areas of the company.
