Although telehandlers are relatively new, they have quickly become very popular because of their many advantages. One of their main benefits is their versatility, which allows them to be used for various applications. But telehandlers naturally need to be well-maintained to keep them going. In this interview, expert Rik Vanwildemeersch explains why TVH is the right partner for telehandler parts.

About the expert

Rik Vanwildemeersch

Rik Vanwildemeersch is Market Management Specialist for telehandlers at TVH. By monitoring and analysing the market, he ensures that TVH can effectively develop and offer from stock its parts range for these machines. Rik started working for the company in 2004 and has since held various positions in different departments, ranging from e-commerce advisor over external sales support to product manager coordinator. These experiences have given him a deep understanding of TVH and telehandlers.

The increasing popularity of telehandlers

The advantages of telehandlers

“Slowly but surely, telehandlers have become very popular, even though they are a relatively recent invention,” Rik begins.“The first models were introduced in the late 1970s and were obviously different from what we know today. Since their introduction, telehandlers have undergone many improvements that increase their efficiency, safety and versatility.”

“Today, the telehandler is a versatile workhorse that can be used in various environments thanks to its advantageous features. Firstly, telehandlers can handle rough and uneven terrain, making them useful in different kinds of construction, agricultural and industrial applications. In addition, they are highly manoeuvrable and can be used in confined spaces because they offer four-wheel and lateral steering next to the standard front-wheel steering.”

“A second advantage is that telehandlers are ideal for accessing hard-to-reach areas since certain models have an incredibly long reach and high lift,” Rik adds. “Finally, and perhaps most importantly, telehandlers can be equipped with a variety of attachments, allowing the user to change the machine’s function completely.”

Blending into the environment

“In short, telehandlers are so popular because they offer the golden combination of reach, efficiency and versatility that many users are looking for,” Rik knows. “To cater to all the environments in which telehandlers are used, machine manufacturers offer a range of models for different applications. They have compact machines ideal for lighter work, while their heavy telehandlers can withstand the toughest working conditions. Another distinction to be made is between fixed-frame and rotating telehandlers. The former are ideal for agriculture and industry, whereas the latter are more useful in construction.”

“Many internal components of these machines are the same, but small differences make them better suited to a particular purpose. For example, agricultural telehandlers have rear hydraulic couplings, 3-point linkage and PTO (power take-off, Ed.) to equip them with typical agricultural implements like a plough or fertiliser spreader. Another difference is the presence or absence of stabilisers. Agricultural telehandlers don’t have stabilisers because the amount of farm work that can be done while the machine is stationary is generally limited.”

The greener future

Electric telehandlers

As telehandlers continue to grow in popularity, manufacturers are focusing on their further development. One obvious step is the emergence of electric models. “It is true that manufacturers are expanding their zero-emission range, which includes telehandlers. With the stringent emission standards and regulations in urban areas, electric telehandlers are in some way a must,” Rik confirms. “But this range is limited to compact machines because only these can get enough power from electricity to function properly. Moreover, telehandlers are gaining ground in agriculture, where electrification isn’t always ideal.”

The possibilities of hydrogen

However, it is still unclear where the new energy forms for telehandlers will lead. Besides electrification, there’s another significant option. “Several manufacturers are also experimenting with prototypes that use hydrogen or fuel-cell hydrogen. But whatever the future holds, TVH will remain attentive and we will adapt our range to what the most current machines require.

TVH, your supplier of telehandler parts

Our focus on telehandler parts requirements has been around for a while. “TVH has twenty years of experience as a supplier of parts and accessories for telehandlers,” Rik remarks. “We introduced these parts in 2004 and have gradually developed our range. Today, we have over 450,000 known references suitable for various models from all major makes, including Caterpillar, Dieci, JCB, Magni, Manitou, Merlo, and many others.”

extensive parts range

Extensive parts range

“With the gradual development of our range, we have gathered all the necessities to keep telehandlers up and running. We have an extensive offering of parts typically needed during maintenance, such as filters and lubricants. But we also stock a comprehensive range of critical and wear parts, meaning components that cause machine downtime if defective. These include hydraulics, electrical components, engine parts, transmission parts, drive axle parts, and more. But that’s not all. While cabin parts may seem less important to the overall functioning of telehandlers, they are vital to machine performance and operator safety. That is why we also stock a large range of windshields, seats, and many more.”

attachments

CAM attachments

“Since attachments play such an important role in the versatility of telehandlers, they naturally can’t be missing from our range. We offer classic telehandler attachments through our own brand CAM attachments, such as buckets, floating forks and pallet fork frames. But we can also help with agricultural-specific attachments like bale grippers and manure forks. Whatever a machine is used for, we can help with the right attachment!”

How TVH gets you the parts you need

“Within TVH, one of our main goals is to help our customers in the best way possible,” Rik says. “To ensure we can provide parts and accessories of the highest quality, we have entered into several partnerships such as Rexroth and Danfoss for hydraulics and Grammer and KAB Seating for seats. Of course, we are also always open to other partnerships to help us provide an even better service for our customers.”

“As the driving force behind the expansion of our range, TVH’s dedicated Telehandler Team plays a vital role in providing relevant parts. The team collects and structures all relevant parts information — such as technical specifications, photos, parts lists by product group, price, delivery time, etc. — on various makes and models of telehandlers so that customers can easily find everything in our online shop. Moreover, the team includes a telehandler look-up service, which responds to customer requests by looking up specific parts and giving technical support.”

“All these efforts are part of TVH's aim to have the most complete range for telehandlers. We continuously monitor all trends and developments in the telehandler industry and keep a close eye on the needs and expectations of our customers. This helps us to adapt our range quickly when necessary and to offer the best possible service for telehandler parts and accessories,” Rik concludes.
