The internet is constantly evolving and millions of companies are transitioning to an online business where petabytes of content are delivered over the web. Ranging from website data, to API output and static files such as images, PDF files, Javascript files, CSS files and web fonts.

A more recent evolution is the massive influx of online video: both live-streaming and video-on-demand.

Delivering your content as fast as possible can be challenging, even for platforms that aren’t that popular yet and don’t receive that much requests. But when the pressure is on and you receive thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of simultaneous connections, how does your platform cope with that?

In this presentation, I’ll show you how to leverage Varnish, the leading content acceleration software, to ensure fast delivery times by caching your content. Both on premise and in the Cloud.

We’ll talk about its architecture, how Varnish complies to HTTP best practices, how you can ensure high hit rates and how you can tailor the behavior of Varnish to the needs of your platform by using VCL (Varnish Configuration Language), the domain-specific programming language of Varnish.

Varnish is CDN technology, Varnish operates in the edge. This presentation also contains examples of edge-side decision making that ensures efficient caching by leveraging a range of context-specific modules.
